So you want to work in retail?
There's a list of things that you might want to have or be, in order to consider a position in the retail world.
It's a personal list, but I think many people out there already in the selling world will understand and be able to relate to. And for those of you considering a job in retail, it might just help you...or make you change your mind.
- A GOOD sense of humor. Second though scratch out
GOOD,better make it a GREAT sense of humor. The situations and people you may encounter will make it neccesary to have one of these. Just when you think, "this person can't be serious!" THEY ARE! So be ready to just laugh it off later. - Thick skin. Toughen up buttercup! You're about to become public enemy #1
- A stress reliever at home. Doesn't matter if its a punching bag, meditation, medication, a nice book, blog, or a stiff drink.
- The ability to hold your bladder. It may be a good 6 hours before the customers will let you take your pee break!
- A map/parking plan! It sounds crazy, but especially if you work in a plaza or a mall, you're going to need a layout of where you are going to park during those crazy holiday rushes! You'll find yourself leaving an hour before work just to drive 5 miles to work. TRUST ME! You'll need the extra time come christmas.
- A good group of friends and family to keep you sane, when you do find time off from work
- The ability to diffuse customer on customer fights.
- Imagination. Better to imagine what you would like to say to that customer, rather than acutally saying it.
- A smile. KILL EM with kindness....not sharp objects.
- Lastly, hope. Hope that it will get better. Or maybe just a plan to get out.
